Acoustic Custom Guitar Care and Feeding Guide

If you’ve invested in a custom acoustic guitar, you want to make sure it stays in top condition for years to come.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to take care of your custom acoustic guitar and keep it sounding and looking great.

Step 1: Humidify Your Guitar

The dry climate in Colorado and the West can cause cracking of a wooden stringed instrument, including custom acoustic guitars. To prevent this, it’s important to humidify your guitar. A small humidifier that fits inside the case is an inexpensive and easy solution. This is especially important for custom acoustic guitars with a solid wood top.

Step 2: Store Your Guitar in a Safe Place

Never leave your guitar in a car during the summer, as the intense heat can be catastrophic. Store your custom acoustic guitar in a safe and dry place, ideally in its case when not in use.

Step 3: Change Strings When Necessary

Many believe that playing a guitar often improves the sound over time. However, strings eventually age and can make the sound lifeless. To keep your custom acoustic guitar sounding great, change the strings regularly. Before changing the strings, you can try cleaning them with lemon oil or boiling them in water for 30 minutes to extend their life.

Step 4: Use Light Gauge Steel Strings

Hanson custom acoustic guitars are designed for light gauge steel strings (.012, .016, .024, .032, .042, .053), also known as “twelves.” Never use heavy gauge strings, as this can damage the instrument and affect its sound.

Step 5: Care for the Fingerboard and Body

The fingerboard on your custom acoustic guitar is bare wood and can benefit from a wipe of lemon oil every now and then. For the rest of the instrument, a soft dusting is all that’s needed. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the finish.

By following these steps, you can keep your custom acoustic guitar in top condition and enjoy playing it for years to come.
